The role of modeling in ecological risk assessment is to predict the effects of toxic compounds on the environment. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are used to map the observed and predicted concentration of toxic substances as well as the resulting effects of exposure to these concentrations.

By linking models with GIS, we can enhance the ability to explicity model spatial dynamics of toxicant concentrations.
